I made the ill-advised decision to make my own floral arrangements for the tables at our wedding. In the days leading up to the big day, our one bedroom apartment was a total disaster — we were living among enormous buckets of flowers, tiptoeing around a million tiny vases, and our floors were carpeted in floral detritus. There were even flowers in the fridge, which had to be emptied of food to accommodate them in an attempt to keep the delicate blooms from wilting in the August heat. It was all-consuming, and neither of us slept more than a handful of hours that week. I pulled an all-nighter writing place cards the night before. I really just wanted it all to be over so I could sleep! The day arrived, ready or not, and once things got rolling, all of my worries over unfinished tasks just sort of melted away. It passed by in a happy blur, and all I really remember is the beautiful energy in the air. In the warm and loving presence of our nearest and dearest, we felt full of life and love. In the end, it was well worth the pain of planning, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat, maybe sans DIY flowers.
